Paul McCartney has announced details of a brand-new solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, out May 29 on MPL/Capitol Records. The record – his first new solo album in over five years – is previewed today by a new single Days We Left Behind, which you can listen to below..
“This is very much a memory song for me,” says McCartney of the song. “The album title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, comes from a lyric in this track. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind, and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past, but then I think how can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. It involves a bit in the middle about John and Forthlin Road which is the street I used to live in. Dungeon Lane is near there. I used to live in a place called Speke, which is quite working class. We didn’t have much at all, but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”

Recorded with The Rolling Stones/Ozzy Osbourne producer Andrew Watt, and his 18th studio album credited solely to Paul McCartney, much of The Boys Of Dungeon Lane finds McCartney looking back on his pre-Beatles life growing up in Liverpool, and promises to find him writing about his past, childhood and family with “a rare openness”.
The past six months have been something of a period of reflection for McCartney. Last month, Morgan Neville’s Man On The Run revisited his post-Beatles rejuvenation, while in November last year, The Beatles Anthology was revived with more archival music unearthed, and a brand-new episode directed by Oliver Murray covering the making of the original 1996 series for which McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr reunited to record songs demoed by John Lennon before his death which Yoko Ono had passed on to his surviving bandmates.
The Boys Of Dungeon Lane is out out May 29 on MPL/Capitol Records.
